Veneers & Everything You Need to Know

Have you ever seen a before and after photo of a celebrity before they got famous? One of the most common things you may notice in these photos is their teeth. While the before photos may picture uneven teeth, gaps, and even some off colored areas, celebrities on the red carpet always seem to flash perfect pearly whites. How did this transformation happen so quickly? In many instances, those in the limelight have visited their dentist for dental veneers.

What are the benefits of dental veneers?

Dental veneers are thin, shell-materials that cover the front surface of the tooth. These shells are custom made to fit your mouth and are bonded to match the color, shape, size, and length of your natural teeth, or the ideal teeth you that want. They can be made from either porcelain or resin composite, depending on your needs.

Getting veneers is a good option if your teeth are discolored, chipped or broken, misaligned, irregularly shaped, or even gapped.

Other benefits of veneers include:

  • Provide a clean and polished natural appearance
  • Stronger alternative to changing the tooth's shape
  • Tolerated by the sensitive gum tissue
  • Can make the teeth appear whiter than they are
  • Resistant to stains that can naturally occur

While veneers are a great option for those looking for the prefect smile, they are irreversible, costly, and not usually repairable if damaged from cracking or chipping. In addition, you may find yourself more sensitive to food temperatures and tooth decay can still occur underneath them.

If you and your dentist decide to go with veneers, you will be taking several trips to complete the procedure. The first trip is for a consultation to determine what veneers will best for you and have impressions of your teeth made. Your second trip will involve the dentist removing half of a millimeter of enamel from the surface of your teeth to compensate for the veneer and make a model of the tooth or teeth. The final appointment will be the bonding of the custom veneer to the tooth surface and shaving it to fit your mouth.
